Our Itinerary

Day One

Arrival at the Villa

You’ll be picked up at the nearby train station in late afternoon to begin your Provence tour. Arrive at the villa with time to unpack, take a dip in the pool and explore this lovely property before the evening’s welcome reception and dinner served in the garden.

Day Two

Coustellet / L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

We’ll start the morning at the Coustellet market, known for having the best fresh produce in the region. Farmers come to town and sell right out of their trucks so it couldn’t be any fresher. We’ll pick up some of their beautiful foods for dinner. Later we’ll explore one of the largest and most famous local markets in Provence at L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, where you’ll find everything from lavender soaps, hand-thrown pottery, trendy clothing and luxurious fabrics to locally made olive oil, fresh fruit, vegetables and cheeses. Considered the “Venice of Provence,” this beautifully set town, graced by canals and the Sorgue River, is also recognized as one of the best places for antique shopping outside of Paris. By mid-afternoon we’ll be home in plenty of time to relax at the villa and maybe take a swim in the pool.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own in L’Isle-sur–la-Sorgue. And dinner at the villa.

Day Three

St. Remy / Les Baux

Today we’ll journey to the charming village of St. Remy where we’ll follow in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh who found inspiration for some of his best work here at the asylum where he was committed for a year. Later we’ll venture to Les Baux, a medieval stone citadel that was once the stronghold of lords who terrorized southern Provence. In Les Baux we’ll see an incredible light-and-sound show in an abandoned quarry, highlighting the artists who were influenced by Provence.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own in St. Remy. Dinner on your own, perhaps at the nearby bistro.

Day Four

Gordes / Wine Tasting

Today we’ll journey to the spectacular perched village of Gordes. This 12th century village, one of the most picturesque in Provence, is an amazing place to explore on your own. And you’ll have all morning to do it. Stroll along and you’ll see small, sometimes stepped alleyways lined with rampart ruins, art galleries and cafes. Two must-sees in Gordes are the impressive 16th century Chateau de Gordes and the charming church of St. Firmin. In the valley below, poppies spring up among orchards of cherry trees. Later in the afternoon, we’ll visit a local family run winery – one of the best in the Luberon region.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the villa.

Day Five

Bonnieux

Enjoy a leisurely morning strolling the narrow streets of Bonnieux. One of the larger villages in the Luberon area, Bonnieux and its sand-colored builings cling to the side of a hill. Sitting on top is the 12th century Haute Eglise. To reach the often closed church, you have to climb 86 steps, past tiny plazas and an old house. The views, however, looking out at a patchwork of vineyards, fields and the neighboring villages of LaCoste and Oppede, are amazing.

In the afternoon, you’ll create several wonderful Provençal dishes during a cooking class at the villa taught by Judi.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own in Bonnieux. Dinner at the villa, dining on your cooking creation.

Day Six

Cucuron / Lourmarin

This morning we’ll travel south over the Luberon mountains to two charming villages. Lourmarin has delightful cafes, boutiques and galleries and is the perfect place for a stroll and a bite to eat at a sidewalk café. Cucuron’s main square is set around a beautiful stone pool, Bassin de l’Etang, which dates back to the Middle Ages and is rimmed by giant plane trees. It’s pretty enough to have been used as the set for the popular French movie “The Horseman on the Roof.”

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own in Lourmarin and dinner on your own at one of the many charming restaurants nearby.

Day Seven

Free Morning / Roussillon

After lunch, we journey to one of our favorite villages – Roussillon. The ochre-colored hilltop village is a photographers dream. Built on the slopes of the Vaucluse mountains, Roussillon is known for its red cliffs and ochre stone quarries. You’ll have free time to explore the village and hike through the quarries.

Breakfast, lunch and farewell dinner at the villa.

Day Eight

Au Revoir…

After an early morning breakfast, we’ll depart for the Avignon train station and your journey home.
