The beauty of the Amalfi Coast has inspired artists, poets and composers for hundreds of years. Today, the little more than 30-mile coast from Sorrento to Salerno is one of Europe’s most popular for sun, fun and romance. And for good reason. The Amalfi Coast is stunning. Perhaps that’s why composer Richard Wagner, painter Joan Miro, writer Tennessee Williams and actors Greta Garbo,  Sophia Loren, Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart sought out this paradise for a picture-perfect hideaway. It will be our perfect vacation spot too. We’ll make our base in Sorrento, in a villa just a few blocks from the main piaza – and in walking distance to all the restaurants, boutiques and gelato shops this beautiful town has to offer. From the top of the high seaside cliffs and from below on the crystal blue bay, we’ll explore the amazing villages of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello; head across the waters to the famous isle of Capri; step back in history to 70 AD when Mt. Vesuvius’s eruption sealed the fate of Pompeii and preserved it for all the world to see. We’ll explore lots of amazing places together, from artisan farms, to mountaintop villages to winding roads that afford us incredible views. But you’ll also have time on your own to roam picturesque village streets, shop the markets and relax in the villa’s garden. This is a wonderful time to visit the Amalfi Coast, when the crowds are few and the weather is perfect.

Our Itinerary

Day One

Arrival at the Villa

You’ll be picked up at the Naples Centrale train station in late afternoon to begin your Amalfi Coast tour. You’ll arrive at the villa with time to unpack, rest and explore this lovely property before the evening’s welcome reception and dinner served in the garden.

Day Two

Sorrento Tour / Free Afternoon

We’ll start the morning with a leisurely breakfast before heading out to tour Sorrento. Sitting on the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples, Sorrento has been a popular resort town since the 16th century. Throughout the town, we will see remains of original Greek and Roman architecture. We’ll start our tour at the Villa Comunale, one of Sorrento’s most tranquil and beautiful spots with views of the ever-changing waters below. We’ll follow with a stroll to Piazzo Tasso, the main plaza in town, with its narrow streets lined with cafes and stores. We’ll visit the remarkable il Duomo Cathedral in the heart of the town, then on to Marina Grande where fishing boats bob gently along the harbor.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the villa.

Day Three

Pompeii

Once the center of commerce for the area, the town of Pompeii had all the trappings of modern-day life in the 4th century BC, including public baths, theaters, gardens and houses designed for its wealthy merchants. Everything changed in 70 AD when nearby Mt Vesusius erupted, covering the entire town in 25 feet of ash and pumice for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinary insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. We’ll journey there by train, spending half a day walking among its ruins.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own and dinner at the villa.

Day Four

Morning Market / Cooking Class

This morning we’ll walk to the morning market in Sorrento. Just up the hill from the train station, this lively market is where the locals go to buy clothing, leather goods, household items and food at prices better than the local shops. After lunch, you’ll have a free afternoon to relax around the villa or stroll down to the Corso Italia, Sorrento’s main shopping street, or through the many small streets in the Old Town housing a number of artisan stores. In the late afternoon, we’ll have a hands-on cooking class with Judi who grew up cooking with her Italian aunt.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the villa.

Day Five

Amalfi Coast Drive

Enjoy a day of exploring the wonderfully picturesque Amalfi Coast. Our private driver will take us along the panoramic coastal road, stopping for views (and photos) of some of the most spectacular sights in Italy. Along the way we’ll visit enchanting Positano and Amalfi where you’ll have plenty of time to see the sites, stroll the streets and shop for souvenirs. We’ll end the day at our favorite spot – Ravello. Slightly off the main road, this town with its Moorish details is home to the Villa Rufulo and its famed courtyard, the inspiration for Wagner’s “Parsifal”, and Villa Cimbrone, with its spellbinding views of the coast.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own. Dinner on your own in one of the many nearby restaurants.

Day Six

Capri / Anacapri

Today we’ll board a boat in the marina and head across the bay to the exotic island of Capri. We’ll spend the day here where you can contentedly while away hours wandering through the narrow lanes of the town of Capri, take a boat to explore the famous cave known as the Blue Grotto, or head up to the less touristy but amazingly beautiful town of Anacapri with its superb views.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own in Capri and dinner on your own in Sorrento.

Day Seven

Cheese Farm Day

After a restful morning at the villa, we’ll head up to a nearby farm where they make the area’s delicious mozzarella cheese. We’ll watch a demonstration of cheese making and then put our own hands to the test in trying to pull and braid the cheese. After the tour, we’ll taste some of the cheese, wines and olive oil produced at the farm.

Breakfast at the villa. Lunch on your own.  And farewell dinner at the villa.

Day Eight

Arrivederci…

After an early morning breakfast, we’ll depart for the Naples train station and your journey home.
